What’s it like to own a stills photoshoot location?

Using your home as a photo shoot location can be a great way to generate some extra income and it’s always nice to see the finished article when the pictures are published in a magazine or used in an Ad Campaign.

If you’re considering offering your property as a shoot location, it’s important to think carefully about how comfortable you would be with having crews in your home as this can sometimes be disruptive to your family life or schedule and isn’t for everybody.

Although most crews are extremely respectful and considerate, occasionally things may get broken. The client will always be insured against damage and if it occurs this will be put right following the shoot but if your home has a lot of fragile or sentimental items, then offering it as a shoot location may not be right for you.

Owning a shoot location also comes with some responsibilities, it’s essential that the pictures on our web site accurately showcase your property as that is what a client will be expecting on the day. It’s also important to ensure you property is always clean and ‘shoot-ready’ when the crew arrives.

If you think that owning a photoshoot location might be for you then please visit our listing your property page for details on how to go about getting it listed.

Stills photoshoot location FAQ’s

  • Costs for a stills shoot location?

The cost of hiring our locations for a photo shoot depends on your needs. An editorial shoot can start from £400 but rise significantly for some of our higher- end locations. Advertorial and advertising shoots will be more expensive than editorial rates and filming locations even more. Prices also vary depending on crew size and the amount of disruption to the owner. Standard booking fees at 1st Option are £95 or 5% of the overall shoot fee, whichever is greater. On filming shoots our booking fee is higher.

  • How long is a shoot day?

A standard shoot day runs from 9am to 6pm and sometimes 8am to 5pm during the winter in order to make better use of daylight hours. Usually it is possible to arrive earlier and to shoot later into the evening, but this will incur overtime charges. Standard overtime rates are typically charged at 20% of the day rate per hour, increasing after 9pm. Overtime is at the discretion of the owner, as are weekend shoots, which also carry a higher rate.

  • Can I decorate at the property?

Most owners are happy to allow decorating at their property, provided it is re-instated to their complete satisfaction following the shoot. All clients sign a booking form prior to their shoot accepting responsibility for any damage that might be done during the execution of their shoot. Some owners actually prefer the clients decoration changes and are happy to keep them afterwards, although in our experience this is quite rare!

  • Any shoot locations outside London?

We have a large selection of locations outside the M25 and throughout the rest of the UK. Our portfolio includes beach houses, country manors and also farms. Additionally, we have a selection of properties in our off-line library and also have some properties abroad. Use our search filters to find what you need, or please get in touch with us and tell us what you are looking for.
